Cancer survivor Polly Ross has taken her diagnosis, added a whole lot of determination, a dash more commitment, then combined those with selectability Training Courses to not only beat the disease but cook herself up a whole new career.
Polly had spent most of her working life serving others culinary delights in all facets of the food service industry from owning a food service business, a restaurant and as a fully-qualified chef when life dished up a devastating diagnosis of Breast Cancer.
She underwent treatment including the removal of lymph nodes and radiation and fought off the disease.
But lingering side effects from treatment meant she had to hang up her chef whites – with the surgery leaving her unable to lift heavy commercial pots and pans and the radiation therapy leading to side effects in the heat of the kitchen.
Not to be deterred the fifty-something-year-old decided to take on a whole new challenge and has forged a new career as a Support Worker.
She thanked selectability Training for helping make it all possible, after Undertaking a Certificate III in Individual Support at the Townsville-based RTO under the Queensland Government’s Skilling Queenslanders for Work Initiative.
“I had to have a big change of career due to my health, so the selectability Training Course really helped to kick-start my career again,” Polly said.
“It gave me the skills I needed to go out and actually approach a totally different direction.
“By the time I finished my Certificate III in Individual Support I already had a job with a disability service provider. Since then I’ve also undertaken a Certificate IV in Mental Health with selectability Training and I’ve now moved up to Pod Leader within my organisation.
“selectability Training courses are fantastic for ladies over 50 that are looking to do something different, looking to give back but needing the skills to do it.
“The training’s very structured, the trainers are great at supporting you and particularly as you do placement at the same time, you can come back in, you can ask questions and it’s really helpful out there on the road to have that support behind you, you’re not just thrown in the deep end.”
selectability Training offers Certificate III courses in Community Services, Individual Support and Business Administration as well as Certificate IV in Mental Health and Mental Health Peer Work with both online and classroom study options.
Training Manager at selectability Training Jonathan Mehigan said success stories like Polly’s demonstrate the benefits of undertaking training for those looking to enter the Community Services / Disability sector.
“We’re very proud that through the high-quality training we provide, we are able to positively impact people’s lives and set them on their way to exciting new opportunities,” he said.
“Polly has been able to find a great positive from what was a traumatic situation by using selectability Training courses as a catalyst for a new career.
“We continue to see inspirational students like Polly benefit from undertaking our training courses, they inspire us every day to continue to provide excellent, flexible course options and I’m sure they will inspire others to take that first step to a new future by enrolling.”
