The program delivered by local NDIS service provider Connecting 2 Community Circles in collaboration with Townsville-based RTO selectability Training will provide a unique combination of theoretical and practical training.

Connecting 2 Community Circles Director Richard Roe said innovative programs such as Steps 4 Success in Health would help address skills shortages in the NDIS sector.

“There is great opportunity for employment in NDIS-related roles but many people don’t have the additional skills that typically come with experience in the Health sector such as in nursing, or the confidence to take that first step into a new career,” Mr Roe said.

“On completion of this program our trainees will be the most highly-skilled entry-level support workers to come out of Townsville, and that is great news for them, for the industry and for the NDIS participants who will have access to carers equipped to deal with the wide variety of care situations.”

Twenty successful applicants will be accepted into the program in the first intake starting study at the end of this month, and another 20 in the next intake in January 2020.

Supported by the Queensland Government’s Certificate 3 Guarantee and Skilling Queenslanders for Work (SQW) programs, it’s fully funded for successful applicants.

Practical skills covered include: First Aid & CPR; Manual Handling for Community Services; Renal Skills – urinary system, catheters, urostomies and incontinence; Cognition – dementia & behaviour management; Central Nervous System – epilepsy and many more.

The participants will also earn a nationally recognised Certificate III in Individual Support – Disability qualification through selectabilty Training.

selectability Training’s Training Manager Jonathan Mehigan said it was exciting to be part of this ground-breaking initiative – the first of its type to be rolled out in North Queensland.

“The success of the NDIS sector relies on a reliable supply of workers with the ability to deliver the services required at a high-quality of care,” he said.

“Steps 4 Success in Health achieves that by ensuring new staff entering the workforce have the skills to fulfil the requirements of their role right from day one, while also considering their long-term employment pathways and career longevity.”
